Fans of Junji Ito, delight! His most well-known work, Uzumaki, is not only being authentically adapted for television, but Netflix has also made the decision to enter the fray with its own take on his terrifying body of work. Twenty of Junji Ito’s short stories, some of which have never been adapted for the screen before, will be collected in a brand-new animated anthology series called ‘Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre‘.
According to Collider, the announcement was first made in June 2022 during Netflix’s Geeked Week. But in just a few short months, further details about the series will be released.
The key art, voice cast, and four new stories that will be included in the upcoming Netflix Anime series ‘Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre’ have been revealed. Being an anthology, we can anticipate hearing Junji Ito’s characters voiced by a sizable cast of actors. Anime enthusiasts may recognise some of the voice actors on board, including: Yoko Hikasa, who provided the voice of Mio on K-On, Yuki Kaji, best known for his role as ‘Shoto on My Hero Academia, Fumiko Orikasa’ ,
As previously said, this new series will be an animated anthology of scary stories featuring a variety of works by Junji Ito. 20 stories will be adapted, some of which have been given names in advance, including “The Hanging Balloons,” “Souichi,” “The Long Hair in the Attic,” and a few others. It is unclear how these stories will relate to one another, either thematically or narratively.
The Japanese horror mangaka’s stories Tomie along with Ito’s ‘Ice Cream Truck’ , ‘Library Vision’ , ‘Headless Statue’ , and ‘Tomb Town; these four stories will be brought to life’ by Ryotaro Okiayu, Sara Matsumoto, Takatsugu Chikamatsu, Ryohei Kimura, MAO, Aya Uchida, Yuki Kaji, Tom.
‘Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre’, a Netflix original production with Junji Ito, debuts on January 19, 2023.
