Veeramae Vaagai Soodum Review
Veerame Vagai Soodham (VVS) begins with a prologue that intervenes in the middle of three events. A gang is on its way to bring punishment to a man whom they have kidnapped. The other two include a group of youths and some petty criminals waiting for someone. The highlight of the film is how director Thu Pa Saravanan lets these three tracks unfold together and eventually brings them together.
But before that, we are introduced to Porus (Vishal, Enough), who is waiting to join the police force, and his family – his father (Marimuthu, playing a softer character for a change), a the lowly constable, who follows only the orders of the superior; his mother (Tulsi, in a regular role), a typical middle-class housewife; and his college-going sister Dwarka (Raveena Ravi, poignant). Then, there is his friend (Yogi Babu) and girlfriend Maithili (Dimple Hayati, OKish), a bank employee. Dwarka is being harassed by Guna, the brother of a local miscreant, and the conflict reaches a point where the girl attempts suicide.
Meanwhile, we get two subplots. One involves Perisutham (Elango Kumaravel, Impressed), fighting a lone battle against a factory owned by Nedunchezhiyan (Baburaj, Bhari),
A wealthy gangster-type hoping to enter politics, corrupting his village. Then, there’s Divya, who has to stop four boys with powerful links in college who have shot a porn video of her.
All three tracks escalate to a point where the villains in each are humiliated and eager to hit back. But then, a mix-up happens and Dwarka becomes an unfortunate victim.
With hardly any clues as to who may have harmed him, can Porus trace the people responsible for his death, especially as the killer is fast tying the ends?
Plot-wise, VVS is in the field of recent mega-films like Irumbu Thirai and Chakra – a normal person who has to find out the identity of a criminal who is as smart as him. In place of cyber crime and robbery from previous movies, we have a corrupt industrialist and gangster. And as in those movies, the protagonist pursues them for personal reasons. It is not as effective as Irumbu Thirai, but is definitely an improvement on the chakra. The way Saravanan escalates the tension in all three tracks keeps us hooked. And in the second part, the film becomes a game of cat and mouse, with both the protagonist and the antagonist trying to outdo each other.
VVS certainly remains entangled as long as it sticks to this core plot. There is suspense and thrill and we are emotionally invested as well as Saravanan manages to set up Porus’ family for reassurance. So we feel like we are witnessing a powerful action drama.
