Lies of P Review: A Challenging Game in 2023

Lies of P has a special way of fighting where you need to block and counter your enemies, and it can be tricky at first. But if you keep trying, you’ll get the hang of it, and you won’t want to stop playing.

You see, the folks who made games like Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls have made a new kind of game, and Lies of P is a part of it. But here’s the twist: Lies of P is a strange version of the old Pinocchio story. In this game, you become Pinocchio and have to find your dad, Geppetto, while dealing with a town full of dangerous puppets.

Now, Lies of P has some familiar characters from Pinocchio, like Gemini, who’s a bit like Jiminy Cricket and helps you out sometimes. But when it comes to gameplay, Lies of P takes a lot of ideas from other FromSoftware games, especially Bloodborne.

So, even though the combat might be a bit tough to get used to at first, once you do, you’ll be hooked and won’t want to stop playing.

Lies of P takes many ideas from other games, like Bloodborne, made by the same people. Sometimes, it feels like it’s following a checklist of things that Soulslike games usually have. It has characters and places that remind players of other games.

Lies of P does have some good things, like letting you pick up lost items and refill your healing stuff easily. But it also has some annoying things that they didn’t fix. For example, to jump, you have to run and press a button, like in old Dark Souls games. And when you want to get stronger, you have to go back to the Hotel Krat instead of doing it at the places where you save.

The hotel visits get better as you play more because you don’t need to go back as much. Also, they add more people to the hotel who can help you with stuff. Some of them give you extra things to do, and the game tells you where to find them. This is one of the good things about Lies of P compared to other Soulslike games. The people in the hotel have their own stories that change depending on what you do in the game

In Lies of P, the choices you make as a player are important. You often have to decide whether to tell the truth or lie when you talk to different characters. Even though the effects of these choices might not be obvious right away, they slowly add up and can lead to different outcomes in the game. But be prepared for a challenging journey.

Lies of P is really tough. It’s one of the hardest games in the Soulslike genre. Even some of the regular enemies can be as tough as mini-bosses because they are hard to defeat. What’s even more frustrating is that some of these tough enemies come back, and the game keeps throwing more of them at you as you progress. Most players won’t want to fight these enemies once, let alone the many times you’re forced to do so in the game.

While Lies of P has some great, memorable, and challenging boss fights, it also has some that are annoying and boring. This is mainly because the game relies too much on two-phase boss fights. These fights can be fun when they’re used sparingly, but repeating the first part of a fight over and over to get to the second part isn’t enjoyable. Two-phase boss fights should be special, but Lies of P uses them too much to make the game overly difficult.

Unfortunately, these excessive two-phase boss fights make it hard for players to feel the usual sense of accomplishment that comes with beating a boss in a Soulslike game. Instead of feeling excited and triumphant, players often just feel relieved that the tough fight is finally over and frustrated knowing that another difficult two-phase battle is coming up.

Lies of P is at its best when you’re not fighting bosses. The city of Krat is a beautiful place with lots of hidden secrets, cool stuff to find, and different places to explore. You’ll go through foggy streets and areas with lots of monsters. Just when you think you’ve seen everything, Lies of P shows you even more. It feels great to move from one Stargazer to another, finding shortcuts, getting good stuff, and beating the enemies in Pinocchio’s way.

One good thing about Lies of P is that it has many different types of enemies. Each place has its own kinds of enemies, and they all attack in their own ways. You have to learn how to use Lies of P’s combat system, which is about blocking and parrying, to fight them. Learning how the enemies attack and doing perfect parries feels really good. But the combat can also be very hard, and even people who like games like Dark Souls might find it tough.

The problem with Lies of P’s combat is that it can be confusing. On one hand, the game wants you to attack a lot because enemies can heal if you don’t. You can also do charged attacks to stagger enemies. But on the other hand, if you attack too much, you’ll get hurt. Some bosses are so tough that you can only block and try to parry their attacks. And even if you do a perfect parry, it doesn’t always help much.

In Lies of P, you can block for a long time if you have enough energy, and you can heal by hitting enemies before they hit you. Fury Attacks make things even harder because you have to do perfect parries, and if you fail, you’ll get hurt a lot and your weapon will break faster. It’s a lot to keep track of, especially in tough boss fights. You can make it easier with better equipment, but it would have been nice if the game let you play in different ways. Some players like dodging, like in Dark Souls, but in Lies of P, parrying is usually the only good way to fight.

Lies of P Review 2023

Playing Lies of P can be a bit tricky because it asks you to be both cautious and aggressive, which can be confusing. It might start making sense if you spend a lot of time getting really good at the game’s combat, but that takes a while. While you might feel like you have to play the game a certain way, the good news is that there are many different weapons to choose from.

In the game, you have a unique weapon system where you can mix and match different parts to create your own weapons. You can also add special powers like fire or acid to your weapons, which can help a lot against certain enemies. And since upgrading your weapons in Lies of P is pretty cheap, you can easily try out different combinations. Even though parrying is still really important, Lies of P deserves credit for giving players a lot of options with their weapons.

But even if you have the best gear, you can still expect to face some really tough challenges, especially with certain bosses in the game. At that point, your best options are to get really good at parrying or spend time grinding to get stronger, which can be a bit boring because there aren’t always a lot of enemies in most areas. If you want some extra help, you can summon a helper called a specter, but the AI for these helpers is not very smart. They tend to charge recklessly at bosses and get hit a lot. So, they’re mostly just distractions for the bosses and not much help.

Having co-op support like in other games like this would have made Lies of P even better, but even without it, the game will definitely appeal to fans of this type of game. It has a lot of strengths, and from a technical standpoint, it works really well. It runs smoothly, looks great, and doesn’t have any glitches that we found. While the writing can be a bit awkward at times, the ending is really surprising and worth enduring some tough bosses to see. Lies of P does have some of the challenges that can make games like this frustrating, but it can be a lot of fun once you get used to the combat. Just be ready to spend a lot of time and deal with some frustration before you really get the hang of it.

Lies of P comes out on September 19 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. We were provided with an Xbox Series X code for this review.
